Melia Dubia (Malai Vembu)

Melia dubia (Malai Vembu in Tamil) is a tree in the family Meliaceae

 

This species grows from mean sea level to 500-600 feet above mean sea level and grows to the height of 40 feet very quickly.

This traditional variety perpetuated in nature through seeds. We observed variation in seeds propagated in seedlings and therefore good mother plants were selected and propagated through shoot tips of young branches.

 

The timber from this tree can be used for house construction, wood works, biopesticides and to produce plywood’s. Besides the fact that neem trees produce high amount of oxygen by using carbon-di-oxide in the air and thus reducing the Co2 level in the air.

 

In India this plant paved way for a forestation program. Recognizing Reddiar’s work the Government of India has honored him with "PADMA SHREE AWARD” in the year 2012 .Reddiar is the first awardee from agricultural sector.
